Configure a provider account
A provider account holds the API key for an AI provider such as OpenAI or Anthropic. The gateway calls the provider with that key. A product lists the provider accounts its customers can use.
Add a provider account
Open the project’s Accounts tab and select Add provider account.
- Select the provider.
- Enter an account name (optional).
- Paste the provider’s API key, or select a secret reference from a connected 1Password integration.
- Select Add.
Modem does not show the key again after you save it.
An account has the same mode as its project: Sandbox accounts for Sandbox projects, Live accounts for Live projects. To use an existing workspace account, select Reuse a workspace account and assign it to the project.
Edit or delete a provider account
Use the actions menu on the account’s row.
Edit an account
Select Edit account to rename the account or replace its credential. The current credential stays unless you choose a new source.
Delete an account
The delete actions depend on who owns the account:
- Delete account deletes a project’s own account and its stored credential.
- Remove from project unassigns a workspace account from the project. The account stays in your workspace.
- Remove account removes a workspace account from your workspace and from every project that uses it. The projects stay.
Requests that need a removed account fail until you connect another account for that provider.
Link 1Password
Link a 1Password service account to read provider keys from your vaults. Modem stores a copy of each key and refreshes it when the vault syncs.
Refresh 1Password values
A sync refreshes the integration’s linked accounts and the project’s payment and authentication-provider fields. If one reference fails, its stored value stays, and Modem records the error. The other values still update. If a reference changes during a sync, Modem does not write the old result to it.
